Too bad Justin wasn't there to shoot it right with a second camera. Nonetheless, awesome launch. Sixteen Hundred pounds!

Everything went off PERFECT! It doesn't get any better than this. About 4,000-5,000 people showed up too. Altitude 4,441', max velocity 450mph, 7
G's, something like 181,000Ns. Blew the entire pad back 9 feet!
Unreal........... Nuff said! |

A few video grabs posted elsewhere. Congrats to Steve.....and the motor crew, the motor case crew, the recovery crew, the ignitor crew, the cluster wiring
crew, the MDRA launch crew, the tower crew.....and all the other folks who made it possible. What a team effort.

Just got back home from a Space Camp weekend at Huntsville with 60 cub scouts (let's say tired).
I know how Steve feels with a smile on his face that really hurts. Scott, I'm envious, you were there. Did you get to help out in anyway? You obviously got closer than most of the 5000 people. I've just got to get to MDRA. It's taken me awhile to get through all the info I can find. Am I correct in that there were several "crews" doing different tasks? I'm most curious about ignition. Thermite: Darrin, did you have a hand in this? If so, may we have details? I've lit a seven motor "P" cluster six times. I'd love to know how the V's ignition compares. What type of match, how many, weight of the themite, how it was rolled, was it put on a stick, and what was used to power the ignition? I saw something that said Steve may put this on display somewhere. Huntsville has a brand new building where their Saturn V has recently been moved to. The place is fantastic. They have two 1/10 scales below the real thing that is hanging in the building. Steve's would be an apt addition to NASA's Huntsville exhibit. |

johnclifton wrote:Scott sure did! I'm sure his hands are still sore from gluing those grains together. Dan Michaels was the main "ignition guy" but I was there as a consult and an extra hand. (I've got a little history with thermite SO......Dual M-tek matches in each motor. The N's had 20g, and the P/Q had 50g. Rolled in saran, put on a stick. each set of redundant matches was each powered by a separate battery connected thru the same relay system. (MDRA has a system that will do this.) The 20/50g was per for the course, just from history. -D |

Standing 100 yards behind a 25% R when it lights isn't something you get to do every day You ain't kiddin Steve!!! Scott, I'm envious, you were there. Did you get to help out in anyway? You obviously got closer than most of the 5000 people. I've just got to get to MDRA. Well John, yes I did get to help out. I guess the word's spread around a bit by now. Not to steal any thunder from the post topic, but, I arrived at Darren's house late last Monday night and went to my first day of work at my new job Tuesday morning. On Thursday, Jeff and I cut up the rest of the 98mm Loki White grains that Darren and he made, I sanded the cores of all 54 grains until they were raw Seeing Steve Eves excitement and watching him jump around in the joy of the moment after the chutes deployed was just as fun to watch. He was definetly on cloud nine durring the celebration. It was good to meet some new faces and see a few familiar ones too. Sorry Ben, I guess I was thinking you already knew who I was. I'm sure to be seeing a lot more of you all in the coming months. Darren and his family have been most gracious putting me up at their place for the week while I look for a place of my own in Philly. I'll be flying back to Missouri Wednesday to load up my things and haul it out to my new place. So far, I'm really enjoying the job, and I'm looking forward to what the future will bring. Congrats, Scott, that's got to be a dream job for you - rockets and rocket motors every day. Who'd'a'thunk a boat salesman from the hills of Missouri would wind up as a motor-maker, eh? Very good, man. |
